Gameplay:
To those diehards of the SOCOM series for the PS2, SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo has not changed in the outfitting for the PSP. The camera views are again controlled through the “Up” and “Down” buttons on the directional pad while the character is moved by controlling the PSP’s thumbstick. The different camera views are the third person, first person, scoped view and when necessary, a night vision view in first person. Only primary weapons with a scope mounted will be able to enter the scoped view. While trying to get a read on where your enemies could be positioned, the camera can enter a “Free view” mode in which the camera then becomes controlled by the thumbstick and your character will respond to your actions. The “Free-view” mode can be activated and deactivated by pressing the “Right” button on the directional pad. When in a mission, weapons/items menu can be accessed by pressing the “Left” button on the directional pad. Once your weapon or item is selected, press the “Left” button again to close the menu. Your character has three different stances, standing, crouched, and prone. These postures are applied by the “Triangle” button. For long range rifle shots, the most accurate view is scoped and in the prone or lying down position.
Fireteam Bravo is made up of two soldier’s codenamed Sandman and Lonestar. As in the other SOCOM titles for the PS2, you’re given a set of commands that are no strangers to veterans of SOCOM series. These commands can be given to your partner, Lonestar by holding down the “Circle” button when a quick command appears on the screen in the lower right hand corner; otherwise, when the “Circle” button is tapped, a list of all of the commands appears and you can chose which command to give to your team member.
Single player gaming can be experienced by either choosing the “Instant Action” or through the “Campaign” options. When in combat, and your enemy comes in range tapping the “R” trigger and then firing by pressing the “X” button. Now the AI in the SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo can be aggressive or just simply retarded. If your character is in the prone stance, your enemy will not usually notice you, unless the enemy steps on you. If your character is standing and trying to pick off the enemy at a distance and miss, the enemy will be alerted to your presence and either run to get into position, or charge blindly into battle. At other times, the AI is spot on behaves like an enemy by spotting you and trying to reposition itself, or by attacking you if you make a mistake like making too much noise and alerting the enemy of your presence. When firing your weapon at the enemy, your choices include a single shot, or a round burst, or an automatic firing option. Your weapons settings can by changed when you bring up your weapons menu by pressing “Left” on the directional pad.
SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo is the first game to offer the most expansive online experience by offering combat for up to 16 players over the internet or “Infrastructure” mode and up to 10 player in “Ad Hoc” mode. When playing online, you will be able to play up five different games: “Suppression”, “Free for All”, “Extraction”, “Demolition”, “Captive”. You will play as either SEALS or terrorists and try to either achieve victory by either wiping out the other team or completing the mission objective. In a “Suppression” game, you goal is to have the most men left standing and respawn points can be included on the maps. “Captive” games are the same as “Suppression” games but instead of having respawn points, you can be revived by another teammate, and the winner has the most team members alive at the end of the match. When online, your profile will become ranked and you can add other players as friends, send and receive messages, leave feedback to Sony, and participate in clans.
The premier feature of SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo is it’s connectivity to the PS2’s SOCOM 3. When syncing the games, you will be able to unlock PSP multiplayer characters, mission weapons, and when completing “Crosstalk Objectives” in SOCOM 3 the unlockables will become active. Some other extras include the introductory movies to the locations around the world, which become unlocked after achieving victory in the previous areas.
