Performance
All of this console level goodness comes at a price, however. In cramming all of that great content into that tiny UMD, the developers have had to introduce longer load times. Some of the load times are a little unbearable. For example, from pressing the button to load the game to actually getting into the game takes a good minute and a half. Likewise, loading times in between levels or zones are about 30 seconds. I’ve also noticed on several occasions (usually when coming out of sleep mode) that the game will freeze up every so often for the first few seconds. From my tests, it seems that it is loading every new sound that it encounters. For example, the game will perform normally until I perform a new action that has a new sound, like jumping. So, you can imagine how bad this is when you encounter a new group of enemies and they each have unique sounds that need to be loaded. Luckily, it only occurs for a few moments after which the action can continue on as normal.
Final Thoughts
The sheer amount of stuff packed into this UMD disc is really worth the purchase price. My only real problem is with the load times. Performance issues of this sort mar an otherwise excellent PSP game. If you’re looking for a really dense yet enjoyable game with tons of high quality content, XMLII is it. If you're a Marvel fan who also owns a PSP - shouldn't you already have this game?
