During the levels you’ll have to acquire two different orbs. One of the orbs comes from the bug you kill and that is how you get paid and are able to move on. You’ll also have to acquire Precursor Orbs. The more Precursor orbs you collect the more you can level up Daxter in the health department and learn new moves. The developers use a nice trick here and they just don’t hand you the techniques for free. Instead you must partake in dream sequences to gain new techniques. For example, you’ll play Daxter as Neo and fight off 50 enemies To win you must time hit the button in which the character is about to step on. Now this may sounds simple but at times you’ll have 10 enemies going at once and you must react quickly hitting the face buttons in a timely matter. That is just one of the several sequences you’ll encounter within the game. After you complete the dream Daxter will wake up and learn a new move or increase in health. In the Matrix case he wakes up and says, “I know Kung-Fu.” And he learns a new spin attack which he can use in the air.
The game also features no load times. After the initial load of the game which is only 5 seconds the game will never have another load screen. The game did unfortunately suffer from some slowdown during gameplay but this was due to the automatic save feature. While it isn’t enough to hinder the gameplay experience it does sometimes interfere with the flow of the game, sadly.
Sound
The soundtrack is simply beautiful. The game sounds as good as it looks. The music is clear and very crisp. If you love the music from previous Jak titles you’ll know what to expect in this game. The music is upbeat in the city but when you get into the heat of the battle the music will change to suit mood seamlessly.
Control
The games controls are precise and very dead on. The only problem with the game in the control department would be the camera. The camera likes to stay behind Daxter and in some situations you’ll have to manually adjust the camera and this can take some time getting use to sadly. Besides the camera problems the game controls and feels very precise.
Overall
Daxter is the platforming game that PSP owners have been waiting for. With an excellent soundtrack, mini-games, a solid single-player game lasting 10-12 hours you simply can’t go wrong with Daxter. This is most solid and fun title you’ll find on the PSP right now and is must-own for any PSP owner. So please add this game to your PSP library.
