Untold Legends hit the PSP at launch and was named the best selling game for the system. The game was the PSP's very first RPG and it still one the systems on RPG's ever after a year has passed. The fine people over at Sony Online Entertainment felt as though it was time to release a new one on the PSP. The game features its own huge adventure. The real-time fighting for the series is trademark to fans and it helps the portable play of the game. Sony has expanded on this idea in the sequel Untold Legends:The Warriors Code. Sony Online Entertainment added a new online multiplayer, it's got a far more polished gameplay design.
Gameplay
Untold Legends:The Warriors Code features a nice customization feature. You will start the game choosing your hero and you will then be tasked to choose hair, face, sex, color of skin, color of hair, name, and then set your attributes. The customization is great feature for handheld title and gives you the chance to truly make the character feel like an extension of yourself. So for those of you who are hard-core in customization of characters you'll be satisfied with this handheld title.
While the customization is great the game is not all great. Untold Legends sadly carries over the same hack n' slash gameplay of the original title. The fighting style is very generic and not deep. The developers did add some new techniques such as the "Attack of Opportunity". With this technique you will be given the chance to perform a more powerful attack than the traditional attack. You have to time the attack and hold down the square button until the time of release to perform the move. Your character will also have a special technique in with he will transform into a creature. For you character is a changeling and after so long he will reach a point in which you can activate the transformation stage. During this state you will be able to use different magic techniques. All the techniques are just one button to use. For example lighting may be assigned to the square button and the fire technique to the circle button. This makes it easier to use the attack but at the same time takes away from any strategy from the game. Like most hack n' slash titles there is little to no strategy involved in the game.
The battles will feel repetitive and never really change as you continue through the game. The boss battles aren't even as challenging as you would anticipate. If you can defeat a normal enemy you have enough skill to beat the boss at the end of the level. This is a disappointment because the game fails to give you that level of difficulty that you would expect from a Action/RPG.
Graphics
Graphically the game is sharp and crisp. The game has nice special effects and looks very nice on the PSP screen. The game sadly doesn't feature a huge increase over the original in the graphics department. Although, the graphics aren't bad they do not show off the full power of the system by any means. The character models look smooth from the distant camera but as you zoom in you can see some jaggies on the models and the lack of texture in the environments.
The environments are rather dull and lifeless. The most you ever see will be a few trees, maybe some snow on the ground and thats about it. You'll find chests and other boxes scattered through out the level with will hold money, potions, equipment, and other items for use. Thats all you'll find in the environments though sadly. The PSP is capable of far more than Untold Legends pushes it to.
Control
The game uses the analog stick for control and it is fairly precise. The analog control will get cramped up after so long and become a real nuisance. The face button for attack and techniques are easily accessible and easy to use. Hit square, cirlce, triangle, for whatever customized attack you had assigned to it. The x button is the main attack button and will be used through 99% of the game. To use special techniques like the beast transformation you will hold down the L trigger hold triangle and transform into your creature. Fairly simple to use and easy to master.
Sound
The game sounds good. You'll hear wind blow as you attack and the sound of the blade hitting the enemy. The soundtrack is decent but nothing out of the ordinary. Don't expect any epic RPG music here folks.
Overall
Overall the game is terrible. The game will last you a solid 72 hrs and you will have fun hacking and slashing for the first few hours. The game loads quickly and the customization is top-knotch for a handheld title. If you are a fan of the original Untold Legends you'll find something love within the game. If you are new to the series try the first one first then come to the sequel for more action/RPG action.
