Me & My Katamari
Katamari PSP Review
April 8, 2006 | 9:48 PM PST

by: Matt Kane

In the fall of 2004, a Japanese sensation rolled across the Pacific to America entitled Katamari Damacy. In this title, players took control over the miniature son of the King of the Cosmos, whose title and name was Prince, original no, clever, yes. This time the Prince and King are back, but this time they’re on vacation on a tropical island. Let’s roll this Katamari!

Features:

  • All new Katamari adventure for the PSP
  • Up to 4 player multiplayer
  • New characters, levels, and items

  • Gameplay:

Me & My Katamari can be categorized as an original title. The game provides a unique introduction movie that is more confusing than informative of the nature of the game. The royal family of the King of the Cosmos has decided to take a vacation on a tropical island. The player takes control over the Prince, and is the player’s job to help the animals on that island. The animals request that the Prince and King of the Cosmos help restore their islands by using the power of a Katamari. Now for new-comers, a katamari is a big sphere that the Prince rolls around collecting random items and junk that sticks to all sides for the sphere and when the katamari gets to a certain diameter, it grows and grows. On the main island there are different animals that have been displaced from their original island and they would like the Prince with the magic of the King, to help restore their islands. When the player decides to help the animals, the Prince is launched into a stage with a katamari with certain requirements, those being time and minimum diameter. Once the katamari fulfills the requirements and the time runs out, the katamari goes before the King and the animal that placed the request (I guess beggars can be choosers).

A nice place to go on vacation...and roll things into a ball

A game this unique is going to require a unique control setup, and succeeds. When taking control of the Prince behind a katamari moving forward is “Triangle” and the “Up” direction while going backwards is “X” and the “Down” direction buttons. Left and right are the “Square” and “Left” buttons, and “Circle” and “Right” buttons respectively. The two shoulder buttons rotate the Prince and the camera. In multiplayer battle games players can Rush each other by alternating “Triangle” and the “Up” directional button. To win the multiplayer battles, the user with the larger diameter will win and have an easier time knocking items off of the other’s katamari.
