Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
REVIEW: How does this Valkyrie fly on the PSP?
July 25, 2006 | 11:36 AM PST

by: Matt Furtado

Before this summer the PSP had little to no RPG's available for the system. That all changed when Blade Dancer and Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth came to the scene. Many people may remember Valkyrie Profile from its original claim to fame on the original Playstation. However, the game became rare and not many people had the chance to play this title. Luckily for us Square-Enix decided it was time to port over the original Playstation title to the PSP so a new generation of fans could enjoy this title.

As the two major god factions war, the main god Odin sends the female god of war, Valkyrie to find human souls to fuel for the conflict. Valkyrie collects many human souls and trains them but her sealed memories begin to return and now she has doubts about Odin's true intentions.

There are two realms that take place in the game: Midgard, the land of the mortals, and then Asgard, the land of the gods. When the game begins you learn that Asgard is locked in the Sacred War. Odin then summons Lenneth who must visit the world of Midgard to collect the souls of strong humans and then send them up to Asgard to serve in the Sacred War. The final battle that will decide the fate of the gods.

Features

  • Relive a classic RPG faithfully converted to the PSP system and enhanced with all-new CG cut scenes not present in the original PlayStation game console version.

  • New event cut scenes contain links to the story of Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria the upcoming prequel for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system, and are collected in a movie gallery.

  • While unraveling the story as Valkyrie in Midgard, time marches on in the Sacred War. Every action in Midgard is reflected in battle reports from above.

  • An exciting battle system allows the player to control their party of four heroes simultaneously. Land successive attacks to build combos, and unleash spectacular special moves and magic to devastate the enemy.

Gameplay
Unlike a traditional RPG Valkyrie Profile has a time restraint your progress. The game comprises of 8 chapters before the final battle will take place. Every time you stop at a town or complete a dungeon you will use a certain amount of periods for each one. If you wanted to you could spend all 8 chapters resting and visiting towns without ever visiting a dungeon in the game. This of course will make you weak and not be able to beat the game and miss out on all the fun of the title. However, to actually beat the game you will travel to different dungeons throughout Midgard recruiting souls for the Sacred War. This is done by simply pressing the start button. Lenneth will then listen for the cries of souls nearing a tragic death. After listening to the poor person die you can then recruit their soul and train them for the upcoming war. Players will be able to find 15 characters throughout the game but you can get by with fewer if need be.

The dungeons of Valkyrie Profile are fairly short and will vary in difficulty based on your characters skills and party. The dungeons are in a 2-D set -up and plays out much like a side-scrolling platformer. You'll take control of Lenneth and jump platform to platform to move on. Throughout the dungeon you'll find treasure chests and even shoot ice crystals to reach unreachable areas. The ice crystals can either help Lenneth jump to higher areas or if you shoot the same ice crystals 3 times they will break and then form a sparkling residue for a few seconds which will allow Lenneth to float on it for a few seconds. The platforming part of Valkyrie Profile is rather troublesome at time. The running is fine but the jumping can be a bother at times. Sometimes the jumping seems a little off but overall it isn't something that will hinder the game in anyway.

Like all dungeons they will be full of enemies to do battle with. If you touch an enemy you'll be drawn into the battle but you can also avoid battle by shooting them with an ice crystal and temporarily freezing them. Of course, you'll want to fight them. Once you get into battle you'll be able to use up to four characters at a time and each one will be assigned to the face button. To attack with a character you simply choose their corresponding button and they'll launch an attack. By timing your attacks you can pull off combos and fill up your gauge on the bottom of the screen. Once there gauge fills up you'll be able to do a special attack called "Purify Soul Attack". You can also se items and magic by pressing the start button and selecting them from there.

As you continue to go through dungeons and level up your fighters you'll be able to send your stronger fighters to Asgard so they can help Odin the war. However, you can also keep them with you and level them higher but you will need to send some of the fighters to Asgard to help out.
