When Killzone was first announced it was dubbed PS2’s answer to X-Box’s HALO, but fell short due to limited use of the technology available and giving the player a truly unique and original FPS experience. Since the announcement of PS3 and a Killzone teaser trailer was released at E3 in 2005, fans of the Killzone story were teased with the possibility of bringing the experience to the PSP, though a few changes would be made to optimize the performance for the PSP.
Killzone: Liberation focuses on the Southern Vektan campaign. Returning to fight the Helghast is Captain Jan Templar and it’s his responsibility to lead the fight against General Metrac. In the first installment Killzone was an FPS but Guerrilla found that changing the game to a third person experience would better suit the PSP’s hardware and provide a more enjoyable experience for the user. The controls are simple and intuitive; moving your character and aiming are done by manipulating the PSP’s joystick and firing your character’s weapon is done by pressing the “Square” button. Your character will be able to crouch behind cover and dive to avoid fire. The “Right” shoulder button can be used to crouch and your character can fire from the crouched position. A double tap on the “Left” shoulder button will send your character into a dive and roll, holding the ‘Left” shoulder button will lock onto a target and strafe. The “Triangle” button reloads the characters weapon and “Circle” throws grenades. Unlike the original Killzone, your character will not be able to carry two guns at once or a plethora of grenades, but rather one gun and two grenades (smoke or fragmentation) and up to three C4 explosives. When escorting another character through a level or EVAC point you can give orders to that character by opening the tactical command screen by pressing the “Up” button on the directional pad. The “X” button will allow the character to enter vehicles or turret guns, or open items. When interacting with a weapons supply crate, a sub menu appears on the HUD, but the action around your character will continue, so be aware of enemy fire.
There are 16 missions in the game, the first mission acts as a tutorial but after the tutorial, the missions are rather straight forward, kill as many Helghast as possible, escort your principle or character to their destination or destroy your target, like an ammunition cache.
