Death Jr 2
REVIEW: Death returns on the PSP. How deadly is this latest title? Full Review.
November 19, 2006 | 8:51 PM PST

by: Matt Furtado

Death Jr has returned to play on the PSP and he is bringing back all his friends. The original Death Jr released last year on the PSP and was one of the first original platforming titles available for the system. Some may also remember it for being the very first PSP title shown to the public. Well Konami decided it was time to release Death back to the PSP owners with a new incarnation of the Death Jr. franchise with Death Jr. 2 Root of Evil. This time players will be able to take control of either Death Jr or the lovely Pandora. Time for some death defying platforming action.

FEATURES

  • Control both DJ and Pandora, each with their own unique weapons and abilities

  • Open-ended environments give players different ways of completing each level

  • Dozens of new possessed enemies, such as robotic llamas, mutant mall security guards and an army of evil toys

  • Enhanced camera system lets players focus on the action

Gameplay

The game opens up with Death Jr and Pandora and company on an assignment trying to locate some cocoons for a biology class. At this point you will be able to choose which character you want to play through as. After selecting your character you will then progress through a basic level with your typical bad guys standing in your way. After killing them, you can gain access to parts which will allow you to obtain new weapons such as a Twin Pistol. The opening world serves as a tutorial for the game and gets the players ready for what’s to come. After being introduced to several baddies and using your weapons Death Jr and Pandora will finally make their way upon a cocoon. Since both of them need a cocoon in order to pass biology, they fight over it which leads to big problems. The cocoon holds an unspeakable evil that uses weeds, trees, and a variety of other things as weapons.

Death Jr 2 plays much like is successor. In order to clear levels you first must destroy every bad guy in the area and then reach the end point of the level in order to move onto the next level. Throughout the levels, you'll find root barriers that will block your progress in the game. In order to clear out these barriers you must find weed killer and inject it into the weed so the barrier is released. The weed killer is stored in syringes that you will have to find throughout the level or with certain enemies. Players will also be able to discover various weapon parts. These parts can be given to Smith and Weston to form new weapons for either Death Jr or Pandora to use in the game. There is a huge arsenal of weapons such as Twin Pistols, Icer, Flaming TP Launcher, C4 Hamster, Tommy Gun, Shotguns, Mines, and a whole bunch of others. Thanks to Smith and Weston’s labs you are never to far away from gaining these weapons once you get the proper parts for them to create them first. Each level contains several upgrade labs where melee moves can be purchased, weapons can be made, upgraded, and ammo can be bought. In order to buy these items though you will need Energy orbs first. Players will be able to gather energy orbs from defeated enemies. Players will also be able to find them in difficult to reach areas in the level and in hidden locations throughout the game. Be sure to look thoroughly in the levels so you don't miss out on any orbs.
