Legend of the Dragon Hands-On
April 1, 2007 | 9:15 PM PST

by: Matt Furtado

The PSP hasn't lacked in the category of 3D fighters in the past year. With releases like Mortal Kombat, Tekken, and Dragonball Z, it has seen its fair share of 3D fighters on the handheld. Game Factory is now jumping into the 3D fighting genre on the PSP with Legend of the Dragon. Based on an upcoming television show Legend of the Dragon is based around the stories of the signs of the ancient Chinese zodiac, which hold within them great powers. In a world where the balance of good and evil is balanced by the guardian of the Temple, the Golden Dragon. The old guardian has passed away and now its time to choose a new one to take hold of the balance of the world.

The guardian must be chosen from a brother and sister. During the Year of the Dragon, twins are born and the brother is chosen to be the new guardian of the temple. However, not all is well after this decision is made and the sister becomes jealous of her brother for being chosen instead of her. After the decision is made, the sister leaves and turns to the forces of evil to destroy the 12 lost temples of the Chinese Zodiac and to overthrow her brother. There's a legend that tells of fighters that are able to accumulate the powers of other guardians, and if a fighter were ever to acquire all the powers of the 12 guardians they would be nearly invincible. This is the goal of the Evil Zodiac Master and his new pad wan, the sister.

Features :

  • Four challenging single-player modes: Quest, Arcade, Survival and Time.

  • Three exciting multiplayer modes: Versus, Team Battle and Tag.

  • Each of the 24 playable characters has a unique fighting technique and, therefore, must be played differently.

  • Characters transform themselves into magical warriors using their wristbands. When transformed they perform different types of magic and cast spells based on their Chinese astrological sign.

  • Lots of collectibles and power-ups along the way.

Enter the Dragon

After getting in several hours of gameplay in of the Legend of the Dragon for the PSP I can say that the game is turning out really interesting. With several different gameplay options like Quest, Arcade, Survival, and multiplayer modes the game offers a lot of variety. Quest mode is the story of the game and will gradually tell the tale of the animated show. Players will first select a hero and then go through their adventure by walking around on the map. As your journey on you will go to each temple and see their guardians. Once you are in a temple and meet the guardian of the temple and you will battle them as well as many other fierce warriors along the way. After each fight your hero will gain new techniques and gain incredible strength. Once you defeat the opponent you will either gain them as a new character or be able to play in that character's side quest.

Each character can transform into an animal representing the Zodiac symbol. Once transformed into their half-beast and half-man self’s new techniques become available for the character. Some the techniques include an energy wave, energy attack, energy blasts, and Ki shields. Players will be able to activate the transformation once their characters Ki gauge is full. Once you activate the transformation you have a set amount of time to use your new powers. The higher the Ki gauge full is the more time you have to use your transformation powers. Once your Ki gauge reaches zero your character will change back into his normal human self.
