Sony Continues Mudslinging Campaign; Their Newest Target: The DSi
April 6, 2009 | 6:12 PM PST

There... there are no words.

Well, perhaps just one: Wow.

Sony's PR team sent Engadget a "Statement from Sony PlayStation on PSP and Competitive Landscape," which basically amounts to more of their sensationalist propagandistic tripe, much like what they launched on the console front earlier this year. This time, however, they've set their sights on Nintendo's hugely-successful handheld, the Nintendo DS, and more specifically, it's latest iteration, the DSi.

Here's the statement, as posted by Engadget:

If Nintendo is really committed to reaching a broader, more diverse audience of gamers beyond the "kids" market that they've always engaged, there isn't much new with the DSi to support that. Significant gamer demographic groups are being ignored, and there continues to be limited opportunities for games from external publishers to do well on the DSi. Compare that with the PSP platform, where we have many blockbuster franchises from our publishing partners launching this year, representing a wide variety of genres and targeting diverse demographics. Games such as Rock Band Unplugged from MTV Games, Assassin's Creed from Ubisoft, Dissidia Final Fantasy from Square Enix, and Hannah Montana from Disney demonstrate the commitment that publishers have to the PSP. From our own first-party studios, we're launching unique versions of LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm, and we're also planning a steady stream of downloadable games -- both new titles and PSone classics -- to add to the content that PSP owners can already purchase wirelessly through PlayStation Store.

I'm really surprised that the guys in Sony PR aren't in politics. Then again, maybe they are-- that could bear further study.

Their headline read "Sony says the DSi is for kids, the PSP is for winners," but fortunately it wasn't quite that bad; the only thing missing would be the term "poopy-pants," or worse, some sort of sexual term repurposed as an insult.

As I see it, the PSP is like a really nice suit or tuxedo: Very nice, looks sharp, but you only really bring it out for special occasions.

The DS, on the other hand, is like a favorite t-shirt, some comfortable shoes, and some shorts on a nice day. Doesn't look as sharp, but it's still a fun and more comfortable thing you can bring out often and relax with.

Oh, and I love how Hannah Montana is a sign of commitment publishers have towards the PSP over the DSi. Riiight. Funny I haven't seen Hannah Montana: The Movie on the PSP's release list, but it's right there for the DS.
