Sony announced at the 2009 Tokyo Game Show that the digital comics distribution service for the PSP announced for the west earlier this year will also be coming to Japan and is already being supported by major local publishers. There is no word on the possibility manga eventually reaching the western services, but given the circumstances it's likely.
The distribution service will launch in December – around the same time it's planned to launch in the west. Around 100 titles are already planned, the full list is at the link below.
Supporting publishers in Japan include Square Enix, Kodansha, Bandai Visual, and many others. Announced titles include Full Metal Alchemist, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and One Piece. Square Enix at the Tokyo Game Show showcased FMA, Soul Eater, and Dragon Quest Saga, among others.
When the service was announced for American and Europe at Gamescom 2009 and Comic-Con 2009, only American comic publishers like Marvel and IDW were announced to be supporting it with no mention of manga. However, with the announcement of Japanese support of the service along with the prevalence of manga in the west, manga appearing on the western stores seems an eventuality.
One of the first non-gaming uses discovered for the PSP soon after its 2005 launch was reading pirated scans of comic books, many of them manga. This official service can be seen as a legal response not unlike how many anime distributors have started offering content online to combat free fan translations.
